How to Install & Setup a Sega Saturn Emulator?

Emulation makes it easier than ever to play Sega Saturn games on current devices. This article will show you how to get a Sega Saturn emulator, install it, and set it up on the device of your choice. To play your favorite old games, just follow these steps!

Step 1

Choose the Right Emulator

Pick the Sega Saturn emulator that works best for your system before you install it:

  • Windows: SSF, Mednafen, Yabause
  • Mac (macOS): OpenEmu, Mednafen
  • Linux: Mednafen, Yabause
  • Android: Yaba Sanshiro 2, RetroArch (Beetle Saturn Core)

Install the Emulator

Windows

  1. Download your chosen emulator.
  2. Extract the ZIP file (if applicable).
  3. Run the installer (or executable for portable versions).

macOS

  1. Download the emulator.
  2. Drag the application to the Applications folder.
  3. Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy and allow the emulator to run if needed.

Linux

  1. Use the package manager to set up the emulator: Use this command to install mednafen: sudo apt install mednafen
  2. You could also download the emulator and remove it by hand.

Android

  1. You can get an APK or the emulator from the main site or the Google Play Store.
  2. Install and open the app.

iOS

  1. Install via AltStore or a jailbreak method.
  2. Open the app and grant necessary permissions.

Obtain & Configure the Sega Saturn BIOS

To play games, most Sega Saturn emulators need a BIOS file. The program might not work right without it.

Steps to Add BIOS to Emulator

  1. Download the Sega Saturn BIOS file (legal note: only use BIOS files from a console you own).
  2. Place the BIOS file in the correct folder:
    • Windows: Inside the emulator’s BIOS directory
    • Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/YourEmulator/Bios/
    • Android: Internal Storage/Emulator/Bios/
  3. Open the emulator and navigate to settings.
  4. Select the BIOS file in the configuration menu.

Load Sega Saturn Games (ROMs/ISOs)

Once your emulator is set up, you need game ROMs/ISOs to play.

Steps to Load a Game

  1. Get Sega Saturn game ROMs or ISOs legally from the games you already have.

  • Use the “Load State” option to resume from where you left off.
